Shall It Be Greed Or Love?

Another philosophical quandary, expressed in rhyme and meter! I have included two additional versions of this poem, the second and third of which are edited versions of the original, I believe are improved by the edits. Feel free to tell me if you agree or disagree... or which version you like the best. The third and final version has a slightly different Title as well, and by adding another stanza seemed to take on a more Biblical flavor which I allowed to carry through to the other stanzas by slightly altering the wording or position of the lines in the stanza.

Shall It Be Greed Or Love?

By: Geoffrey Marshall Regent

Our flesh has its unending demands!

Our minds; Where we've taken our stands!

Our souls too; speaking constant commands!

From all of these: We fill up our hands.

Is it not true, the actual seed,

of our most dangerously held greed;

Is naught, but an unsatisfied need;

Which we failed, to adequately feed?

Disasters, risks and missteps... are rife!

Is nothing ever... easy in life?

It's like striding... the edge of a knife!

Seems it's nothing but... conquering strife!

By your own choice, not by someone's shove!

Take your hardened heart, out of that glove!

Like that which is expressed by the dove;

Let you actions be given by love!

Discover, thus your actions bear fruit!

Without even trying to recruit...

Those near you, may start following suit!

And then, you will think: Ain't life a hoot!

*

Never being content to leave my work alone;

Here's an alternate version... which I actually think is much better...

*

Mankind perniciously harbors Greed!

Is it not true... that this Fecund Seed;

Is but... a thoroughly twisted Need,

That we wrongly keep trying to Feed!

Our flesh, declares unending Demands!

Our mind, is where we take up our Stands!

Our soul, constantly speaks its Commands!

From all of these: We fill up our Hands.

Is nothing Ever EASY... in Life?

Missteps, disasters, risks... being Rife!

It's like striding... the Edge of a Knife!

Seems Life's nothing but... Conquering Strife!

By your own Choice! Not by someone's Shove!

Extract, your troubled Heart from that Glove;

Then, just like... the proverbial Dove;

Let your actions... be given by Love!

Discover thus... Your actions bear Fruit!

And you'll think: Man! Ain't life a Hoot!

Then, not Even trying to Recruit...

Those near you, may start following Suit!

*

Once again I couldn't quite leave it alone.

It seemed to start too sharply so I added another stanza and in doing so it gained an even more Biblical flavor

which I allowed to carry through the other stanzas, slightly altering a few lines.

This version, has a slightly different title as well. I think it is now more complete and thus stronger.

Shall It Be Envy And Greed Or Love?

By: Geoffrey Marshall Regent

With Us, From OUR Very Beginning:

Envy, When ANOTHER Is Winning!

Then, We Find Ourselves FALSELY Grinning;

While, Steadily Our BLOOD Is Thinning!

Mankind, Perniciously HARBORS Greed!

Isn't... UNRENOUNCED, This Fecund Seed;

Naught But... A THOROUGHLY Twisted Need?

We Keep, SINFULLY Trying To Feed!

Our Flesh, DECLARES Unending Demands!

Our Mind, Where We SHOULD, Defend Our Stands!

Our Soul, Speaking CONSTANT Reprimands!

From Each Of These: We FILL Up Our Hands!

Is Nothing Ever EASY... In Life?

Missteps, Disasters, RISKS... Being Rife!

It's Like STRIDING... The Edge Of A Knife!

Life: Seeming Naught BUT... Conquering Strife!

Extract, Your TROUBLED Heart From That Glove!

By Your Own CHOICE! Not By Someone's Shove!

Then, Just LIKE... The Proverbial Dove;

Let Your Actions... BE Given By Love!

Discover THUS... Your Actions Bear Fruit!

And You'll Think: LORD! Ain't Life A Hoot!

Then, Not Even TRYING To Recruit;

Those Near You... MAY, Start Following Suit!

Prince EL

I like the first one better. I would substitute the word flesh with nature, as in human nature. This way it would translate better for those who perhaps don't understand this Biblical term. Great poem!
