Switzerland, being full of picturesque surroundings, affluent society, and solid infrastructure, is one destination worth visiting. Though, there are several things everyone's first visiting this place must be told about to achieve their optimal duration spent there.
- Languages: There are four official languages in Switzerland: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. The language used varies by region, so don't be surprised if road signs change along the way. Although English is spoken widely in tourist regions, a few local phrases are always welcome.
- Swiss German: If you speak standard German, note that Swiss German dialects are quite different. Locals tend to shift to High German in tourist environments but do expect some variation in pronunciation.
- Money and Payments: Switzerland employs the Swiss Franc (CHF), but not the Euro. Although credit cards are well-supported, small businesses, particularly in the countryside, might only take cash. Contactless payments such as Apple Pay and Google Pay are also ubiquitous.
- Switzerland is Expensive: Switzerland is lovely, but it's also very expensive to travel to. To be thrifty, eat at supermarkets, engage in free activities, or use transport passes such as the Swiss Travel Pass.
- Power Plugs: Switzerland has Type J power outlets. If your electronics use a different plug, don't forget to pack an adapter.
- Different Landscapes: Though small, Switzerland is home to a variety of landscapes, from Mediterranean atmosphere in the Italian-speaking region of Ticino to white-capped Alpine peaks.
- Public Transport: Swiss public transport is very efficient and well-organized, where trains, buses, trams, and boats cover the country. Carrying your own vehicle is possible but not necessary; you can make it easily using public transport.
- Bordering Nations: Switzerland is bordered by Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein, so it is convenient to take day excursions to neighboring nations.
- Not in the EU: Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, but it has agreements in place to make travel easy between Switzerland and EU nations. Visa policies depend on nationality, so check ahead if needed.
- Visa Rules: Switzerland belongs to the Schengen Area, meaning that many travelers can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. Check visa rules prior to travel.
- Four Seasons: All four seasons exist in Switzerland, each of them beautiful in their own way. From winter skiing to summer hiking, there's something to do every time of the year.
- Safe for Solo Travelers: Switzerland is also very safe for solo travelers. With well-labeled paths, excellent public transportation, and pleasant locals, solo travel is hassle-free and pleasant.
- Airports: Switzerland’s major international airports are in Zurich and Geneva. Both are well-connected by public transport, making it easy to start your trip right away.
- Tap Water: The tap water in Switzerland is clean and safe to drink. Bring a reusable bottle and refill it throughout your journey.
- Sunday Closures: Most shops close on Sundays, so plan your shopping ahead of time.
- Grocery Stores Close Early: In areas outside of major cities, supermarkets tend to close early at 7 or 8 PM, so stock up ahead of time.
- No Tipping Culture: No tipping is necessary, as bills already include service charges. It is, however, appreciated for good service to leave small change.
- Hiking Paradise: Hiking is a popular national pastime, with more than 65,000 kilometers of hiking trails. For the beginner and seasoned hiker alike, Switzerland has trails for all.
- Cheese and Chocolate: Swiss chocolate and cheese are world-renowned, so be sure to try both. Stop by a traditional cheese factory or a chocolatier to see how it is made.
- Cable Cars: Cable cars in Switzerland make it simple to reach gorgeous mountain summits and panoramic panoramas. A journey to destinations such as Jungfraujoch or Mount Titlis provides unforgettable scenery.
- Punctuality: Swiss people are punctual. Trains, buses, and even parties adhere to schedules, so be sure to be on time to avoid interfering with others.
- Swim in the Lakes: Switzerland has some of the cleanest lakes in the world, so perfect for a dip, especially during summer. Most lakes have areas set aside for swimming with floating platforms and changing rooms.
Switzerland presents the special combination of natural charm, cultural variety, and first-rate services. Bear these recommendations in mind and use your initial trip as a holiday to remember!
