Fergus MacRatha had drunk too much ale the night before. His head was groggy, his mouth dry and sour. He rolled over onto his back. The light of the sun broke through a hole in the thatched roof, piercing down through his eyelids. He groaned. Then something blotted out the irritating light. Fergus forced his heavy eyelids open and squinted. His vision was blurred.

A figure stood over him. Fergus rubbed his eyes, ‘Meala!’ he coughed, clearing his throat.

‘No! it is not, that bitch!’ the woman hissed.

Fergus’s heart skipped a beat, his guts tightened.

‘Bel!’ Fergus's voice broke off. his eyes widened in horror.

Belisana Argetlamh held Meala Blaithanan's severed head in her hand. She snarled down at him, her face twisted with hate and rage, and then she plunged her sword into Fergus’s chest, ‘For my people!’ she spat.

Kell Foxhair was dying!

The spear wound to his gut had done its grisly work, well. At least he had cut down his enemy with a decapitating final blow. It had been satisfying seeing the Micéni Clansman scum’s, head, roll from his shoulders. And the taste of his blood splashing on his own lips was like a fine sanguine wine. A fitting last drink to quench his thirst before death took him.
