I WISH TO WISH
I wish to sit alone under a tree
On a riverbank in the wilderness.
Let my memories ride on a steed,
No reins to stop it from galloping.
I wish to stop at the old country
school,
Sit on the petite wooden chairs,
Read stories from the picture book,
Guzzle water from the fountain,
And utter once again how refreshing it
is.
I wish to walk in the rain after
school
On a footpath lined with shady oaks.
I want to pull the rain-drenched branches
When girls underneath gossip in uniforms—
Their sodden attire and scowls I love.
I wish to sit on the park bench again
Under the grand old p?hutukawa tree.
When yodelers and warblers begin their
chorus,
I want to respond and join their
ensemble.
I wish to kick around a ball on that
field,
Vast and green, with goalposts so high.
Spectators cheer from the sidelines
As I score my penalty goal once
again.
I know these wishes of mine may never come
true,
But I wish to wish them in my solitude.
