List of Port Codes in India

A Port code is a code that is issued to any location involved in international trade and transportation, including seaports, airports, and other inland destinations. Most major shipping companies and freight forwarders employ this framework. This code plays an important role in exporting goods outside India and importing goods from other countries.

The word "port" comes from the Latin word “portre”, which means "to carry". Maritime transport does approximately 95 per cent of all trade in India. In terms of value, it's at 70%. India has 13 large ports and 205 minor and intermediate ports that have been notified. Nhava Sheva Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust JNPT, also known as Nhava Sheva, is India's biggest container port while the oldest operating Port in India is Kolkata Port (formerly Calcutta Port).

A custom port code that is allocated to any port that facilitates international trade and transportation. A unique port code allocated to the seaport is known as the Seaport code. These codes can be seen on bills of lading, invoices, and contracts to ensure that everyone in the supply chain is on the same path. Most major shipping companies and freight forwarders use this framework. The port's geographic location defines the seaport codes. The letters in the first two slots of the three-position code are usually assigned alphabetically. The first two positions match the coastline—the port's major geographic area, represented by the first place of the three-position code.

In the event of exporting goods to India, a port code is required. However, no port code is required in the case of exporting services to India in the GST return. According to the Customs Port Code List, Mundra's port code is INMUN1, while Nhava Sheva's port code is INNSA1.

To find out the port code you only need to follow some steps

• Find your port code on the customs official website by visiting: www.cbic.gov.in
• Go to the GST tab, and you will find a list of all port codes in a PDF file
• After that you need to search for your required state name
• Then the required port code will appear in front of you.
